Whether you’re planning a weekend road trip out to Prince Edward County or heading over to Trenton to see what quality vehicles Lange & Fetter has to offer, there’s so much to see along the Highway of Heroes for folks out west. From Instgram-worthy photo ops to quick pit-stops to stretch your legs that aren’t your standard gas station, there’s no shortage of activities and sights to take in as you embark on your next adventure to eastern Ontario!

The Big Apple, Colborne

The Big Apple is a popular roadside stop for many travellers on the 401. In addition to great restaurants and baked goods, you can climb to the top of the apple and get a panoramic view of the area. A restaurant, a gift shop, and several activities for children are available. A small amusement park has recently been added, as well as a mini-putt course. Browse the gift shop and grab some treats to take with you on the rest of your road trip to PEC – we definitely recommend the caramel apple crumble.

Sandbanks Provincial Park

sandbanks

Located on the shores of Lake Ontario, this park is considered one of the best sandy beaches in Ontario and features the largest freshwater sand dunes in the world. The golden beaches of this park make this an interesting stop for swimming or having a picnic and appreciating nature, not to mention this fragile habitat is home to some interesting and rare flora, as well as some of the park’s wildlife. Fans of birdwatching, camping, cycling, fishing, and swimming are sure to find something to love about Sandbanks!

Port Hope

From scenic, meditative walks along Laveanne Lavender Fields to a 200-acre farm stocked with Nigerian Dwarf goats, Icelandic horses, alpacas, chickens, and more at Haute Goat, Port Hope is chock full of interesting attractions. One of the best you can see from the 401 is the VW Beetle Spider, a massive sculpture with dangling spider legs suspended atop a post. Try getting a selfie with this creep-crawly art piece straight from your truck!

Prince Edward County Wineries

Prince Edward County is renowned for its assortment of wineries and breweries. Depending on the winery you visit, you can have a tasting experience or go for an interactive wine-making guided tour. For example, Sandbanks Winery offers complimentary vineyard tours daily, and you can also check out the art gallery or have a complimentary wine-tasting experience with the purchase of 2 or more bottles. Head to the county and visit the amazing vineyards and awesome craft breweries, or taste some of the incredible local cuisine and artisanal cheeses.

National Air Force Museum of Canada

The National Air Force Museum of Canada is an aviation museum dedicated to preserving the history of the Royal Canadian Air Force. With over 75,000 square feet of display space attached to a sprawling, 16-acre air park, plan to set aside a few hours to truly enjoy this aviation gem. There are also over thirty monuments in the Airpark and museum and many exhibits that tell Canada’s Air Force story, like Burgess Dunne, Canada’s first military aircraft in this museum, attached to the massive 16-acre airpark.

Tyendinaga Caves

The Tyendinaga Caves are Ontario’s oldest natural cavern. You can explore them yourself or join a guided tour through this fascinating tourist attraction. Although a famed tourist destination, the site has maintained its authenticity and is a must-see in the region.
